Hi all,

Well I have been having a problem with Marley pulling on the lead, Inky is fantastic, but with Marley pulling she was making Inky want to pull aswell. I tried the stopping when she pulled, shortening the lead, calling her to heel and praising her yet nothing was working. I then decided the only way I could beat it was to take her out on her own, as once she stopped pulling Inky would too. Inky on his own was perfect, Marley still pulled. After a few days of taking 1/2 hour to get 100 meters lol she was beginning to get the idea,  she'd stop and look at me as if to say are you insane, why are you just stood there! Tongue. Anyway my sister came over and I was telling her, she told me to loop the lead around her nose on the bridge, I gave it a try later on that night. She and Inky flapped about like crazy for a couple of minutes and then hey presto, they calmly walked at the side of me!! This has continued to work, I praise them like mad and give them a treat. The problem is I need a new collar and lead for them and I've seen someone out yesterday walking their dog with a collar and lead that had a strap over the dogs nose, id prefer to get a proper one rather than looping there lead around their noses. Does anyone know which is the best to get? and where I can get them from?

Hope you are all ok
hugz xxxx

Thankyou both, I can understand why you don't like them. To be honest when my sister first showed me I cringed and thought how cruel, but I thought id give it a try as nothing else seemed to be working with Marley, and it worked straight away. I've been using it every day and they are alot calmer when out and seem to be enjoying the walk better themselves, it doesn't hurt them as they wont pull because they dont like the pressure on their nose, Marley doesn't even bother now when I go to put it on her. Im only using it as a temporary measure, my sisters boyfriend uses them and says once they are used to it you can remove it and if they start to pull just show them the strap and they will calm down.
thanks for the advice xxx
How are you both, missed talking to you xxxSmile

I've never used the head collar type, but know people who have and found it effective, try googling Halti Headcollar, I think they do them at Pets at Home.
When we first got Mia, she was pretty awful on the lead and I used a harness for her, made her look a bit like a skinny guide dog, but it did the trick and she's now pretty good...although being a stubborn Saluki she still has the odd day when she pretends to have forgotten everything shes ever being told!!

Does the harness stop them pulling then? Marley is alot calmer now with the strap over her nose, she doesn't bother when I put it on and she walks really calm now, Inky still doesn't like it but after a minute he walks fine on it. I saw some little chihuahuas with harnesses on today and they looked so cute, but obviously not as strong as Marley and so wonder if it will keep her as calm as a head collar. I saw the halti headcollar today but they only had a size 2 and thought maybe too big, they had their own brand in pets at home, but im unsure which to get as did read Halti ones were the best.
Im fine, and i've found a solution to the dogs destroying the house! I started to leave the cat in the kitchen with them when I go out, they don't hurt him, they play with him for about 5 minutes and then go lay down. I've done this the last few days and had no mess whatsoever its amazing lol, I went out with my MIL for the afternoon and was gone for longer than normal, 3 and a half hours, I came back to no mess again, fantastic!!! hahaha, they must just like the company of him there. When I came back the cat was in the dog bed and Marley and Inky was laid on the large cushion bed, all peaceful and happy!! Big smile.
Kids are all off school now so ill more than likely be stressed to hell by the end of the fortnight!

That seems to have flown by your sisters pregnancy, what a lovely time to be due, wouldn't it be nice if her baby came on your birthday, that would be so special!Smile. Hope you have a nice birthday, oh and id love a pink harness but I dont think my OH would be happy to walk her in that haha I was looking at some pink ones today, but you should have seen his face when I got Marley her pink puppy collar and lead with diamantes in it hahahaha.
Good luck to your sister, send her my love and let me know whe she has her baby xxxxx ;))

Sal do you still use the harness on Mia? how are you doing? Is it after the hols when you start your new job? xxxx

Hi all,

Hope you are all doing well, i've missed chatting to you all.

I've decided against a head collar, I went to our local pet store and got some great advice from a sales assistant there, she showed me the harnesses and recommended one to me, it has padding for their chest and padding on the shoulder harness so ill be nipping down for some this weekend. Inky has got so big he is now the same height as Marley!! Marley has more of a whippet shape to her now, Inky is more bulky lol, he has a lot more fur on him too, Marley's is so smooth and fine whereas Inky's is thicker and wavy but looks so glossy Heart
Marley's puppy collar still has loads of room in it but Inky's is getting a bit on the tight side! Ill have to post some more pics up for you all to see when I get the time.

I've put them in what used to be a pantry room in the kitchen, they love it in there, it's their own little space to get some peace from the kids! haha. When I go out I put a baby gate on and they hold it till I get back. It seems to have helped Inky alot as he was pooping everytime I took him out, but he's going alot less now. It's so nice to come home to a clean house, no chewed yellow pages..... heaven!Big smile The last 2 mornings I've come down to no mess and they don't get locked in overnight yet. What age could I leave them overnight? They are now nearly 7 months, the longest i've left them in is for 3 hours through the day. Im normally in bed for 8 hours no more, even at the weekend unfortunately! Is it too soon yet?

Hope your job is going well Sal, and hope your sister and baby are doing well Courtney xxxxx
